Snuggled in the heart of the ancient neighborhood of Trastevere, this piazza morphs from a quasi -casual aspect by day into an elegant theatrical performance by night. Featuring a tiered fountain at its center, the main focus is the gold mosaic of the Madonna and (as one theory goes) ten Virgins bearing oil. The oil relates to a legend of oil here at this church. Specially shaped, cut, and lifted elements evoke the “Divine Diva’s Vigil” energetic sense or vibe here.
Each of these art pieces illustrate the extraordinary, people-magnet places described in my book, Enlightened Rome: Discover the Magic of Piazzas and Public Spaces in Rome, Italy. This sculpture features the piazza’s open space as positive, and the building areas as negative. The cut, lifted elements highlight the character of the singular energy of this piazza.
