There’s a wonderful legend associated with the Isola Tiburina, the island in the Tiber that is the home to this piazza. Hint: the Aesculapius medical symbol derives from this legend and this place! The piazza forms the command center of this boat-shaped island. S. Bartolomeo welcomes visitors and honors martyrs of this and the previous centuries. Specially shaped, cut, and lifted elements evoke the “Compassionate Ship’s Wheel” energetic sense or vibe here.
Each of these art pieces illustrate the extraordinary, people-magnet places described in my book, Enlightened Rome: Discover the Magic of Piazzas and Public Spaces in Rome, Italy. This sculpture features the piazza’s open space as positive, and the building areas as negative. The cut, lifted elements highlight the character of the singular energy of this piazza.
